Earthquakes Sign Amarikwa To Contract

The San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer have signed former UC Davis men's soccer player Quincy Amarikwa to a contract, the club has announced. Amarikwa became the first Aggie to be drafted in the MLS SuperDraft when the Earthquakes took him in the third round last month.

Amarikwa was signed to the Earthquakes' senior roster, which also makes him the first Aggie to achieve that status. The All-American forward has already begun to make a name for himself at the professional level during the first month of the preseason. Amarikwa's first professional goal was the game-winning strike in a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Sounders (United Soccer Leagues) in San Luis Obispo.

UC Davis Announces 2009 Football Schedule

Matchups against Western Athletic Conference members Fresno State and Boise State, along with an early-season home game against NCAA Division I FCS runner-up Montana, highlight the 11-game 2009 UC Davis football schedule announced on Wednesday.

The most ambitious schedule in school history, which also features a home game against playoff participant and Great West Conference rival Cal Poly, has five dates at Aggie Stadium.

One of the six road games will not be far, however, with the 56th annual Causeway Classic at nearby Sacramento State in November. Four conference games - two each at home and on the road - are also part of the slate.

Aggie Stadium, entering its third season as home to the UC Davis football team, will host games against Montana (Sept. 12), Western Oregon (Sept. 26), Winston-Salem State (Oct. 17, Homecoming), Cal Poly (Nov. 7) and North Dakota (Nov. 14)

After opening the early portion of the season at Fresno State (Sept. 5) and Boise State (Oct. 3), UC Davis will travel to face South Dakota (Oct. 10), Portland State (Oct. 24), Southern Utah (Oct. 31) and Sacramento State (Nov. 21).

UC Davis To Add Women's Field Hockey In 2009

Field hockey will become UC Davis' 15th women's varsity sport overall, the sixth added since the 1996-97 academic year when it begins competition in Fall 2009, Director of Athletics Greg Warzecka announced on Friday.

The addition of women's field hockey as the university's newest varsity sport came about as the result of the campus's ongoing practice of assessing the intercollegiate athletics program. It started with an invitation to club sport teams in June 2007 to attend an informational meeting about intercollegiate athletics and to submit proposals for elevation to varsity status.
