UC Davis Lands 13 On Academic All-Big West Teams

A total of 13 UC Davis student-athletes have earned 2008-09 Academic All-Big West Conference honors for the winter season, it was announced Tuesday by the conference office. The Aggie women's and men's swimming and diving teams had the most student-athletes honored with six apiece while men's basketball honored one.

A total of 92 student-athletes earned the all-academic honors among the nine-team conference. To be eligible for such distinction, student-athletes must have maintained a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average or better, completed one full academic year at the member institution prior to the season, and competed in at least half of their team's contests.

Women's swimming and diving had the most overall honorees as a total of 33 student-athletes earned distinction. From UC Davis, senior Kendra Hughes, junior Heidi Kucera and sophomores Linda Hermann, Rebecca Koch, Samantha Capozzo and Julie Peri were named. UC Santa Barbara topped the list with 10 student-athletes. The men's swimming and diving team was represented by senior Michael Androus, juniors Scott Weltz and Russ Underwood, and sophomores Paul Navo, Tristan Kaiser and Adam Borchard. Weltz's honors come on the heels of his two honorable mention All-America honors while Borchard was recently named UC Davis' Big West Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Weltz Gains Second All-America Honors To Cap NCAA Championships

In a similar performance to his opening-day efforts, UC Davis junior Scott Weltz finished 13th in the preliminaries of the 200-yard breaststroke and placed 16th overall to earn his second honorable mention All-American honors during the final day of the NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Student Rec Center Natatorium on the campus of Texas A&M.

Weltz went 1:55.11 during the prelims of the 200 breast to gain a spot in the consolation finals. He finished 16th overall, going 1:57.11 in his second swim. His prelim time was his second-fastest mark of the season and was just 0.20 seconds off his school-record time. In addition, Weltz's 100 breast split of 55.25 in the prelims broke Matt Casto's five-year-old school record.

Kucera Gains Best Showing During Final Day of NCAA Championships

UC Davis junior Heidi Kucera continued her improvement at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships during the final day of competition as she finished 18th in the 200-yard breaststroke at Texas A&M's Student Rec Center Natatorium.

Kucera went 2:10.95, which was her second-fastest time of the season and left her just 0.14 seconds off a top-16 mark and an honorable mention All-America nod. In addition, her 100 breast split time of 1:03.24 ranks as the fourth-fastest this season. Kucera improved her showings during all three days of the championships. She finished 54th in the 200 individual medley and 24th in the 100 breast during the first two days, respectively.
