UC Davis Wins Fours At Big West Beach Tourney

UC Davis women's volleyball highlighted its spring season by winning the Big West Conference Beach Volleyball tournament, hosted by Long Beach State at Huntington Beach's Huntington Pier on Saturday.

No scores or statistics are available. The tournament is not officially sponsored by the Big West Conference, but features several of the league's top squads.

The event consisted of doubles and four-person divisions, with the Aggies opting for the latter category. Each matchup, done in a round-robin format, consisted of two 21-point sets with a 23-point cap.

UC Davis swept its two-set matches against UC Irvine, Pacific and Long Beach State's No. 2 team, then split its final pairing against Long Beach State's No. 1 squad. The Aggies won the four-person division with a 7-1 overall record.

Ibekwe Named To All-Big West First Team

UC Davis senior Renee Ibekwe earned a first-team nod on the All-Big West Conference women's volleyball squad, it was announced by conference associate sports information director Julie St. Cyr Tuesday. Furthermore, freshman Keala Peterson was selected to the All-Freshman Team.

Both student-athletes are the first in Aggie volleyball history to win those respective awards in the Big West Conference. Libero Avreeta Singh captured All-Big West honorable mention in 2007, the school's first year as an official member.

Ibekwe, an outside hitter from Carson, Calif., led UC Davis in kills (380) and total attempts (1,162) while adding 15 aces, 326 digs and 31 total blocks. She ranked fifth in the conference at 3.58 kills per set, having sat atop the leaderboard for most of the year.

Seniors Celebrated In Saturday's Season Finale

UC Davis concludes its 2008 season with a Saturday home match against Pacific... It will also be the career finale match for four seniors: Renee Ibekwe, Chantal Paschetta, Michelle Nelson and Erin Turner... Ibekwe's rise in the program is well-known: she redshirted in 2004 and played sparingly for two years before breaking out in 2007... She has ranked among the Big West leaders in kills for the entire season, including the No. 1 spot for most... Paschetta was the Aggies' leading hitter in her first two years before switching to the right side... Nelson broke in as a setter when UC Davis ran a 6-2 system, then moved to a permanent DS role... Turner transferred from Kentucky in the spring of 2007, hit 202 kills for the Aggies in 2007, but has been sidelined from her comeback from injury this season.
